Texas-Holdem Strategy

When to Walk Away from a Texas Hold’em poker game

You should always call it quits when you’ve reached your stop-loss point, whether you are winning Texas Hold’em or losing. If, for example, you’ve decided you will quit whenever you sustain a $200 loss, then you should always stick to the decision you made beforehand. These decisions are more likely to be logical and are not subject to emotion or “heat of the moment’ feelings, so it’s best to strictly adhere to them. Just be sure that the number you pick for your stop-loss is greater than a standard expected swing in the game.

You should also call it a night if you feel that you are losing focus.  If you’re having trouble concentrating on a Texas Hold’em game, if you’re distracted, or if you’re simply too hungry or too tired to play well, then it’s probably best to end your playing streak. Even if you are winning prior to these feelings, it is best that you only play when you can fully concentrate on the game and the decisions you are making.

It’s also a good idea to walk if the game has gone bad. If you find yourself surrounded by professional players, sharks, or simply people who are more skilled at the game then you are, it’s probably a good idea to quit or to try and find somewhere better to play.

In the end, the decision of when to play and when to walk will be up to you, but keeping these tips in mind can help keep you from losing big.
